Let the season begin! 2013 is looking like it may present lots of new fun exciting challenges on the farm. First let me report that we are fairly on schedule with our soil amending and seed starting. Most of the fruit trees are cleaned out, fertilized and pruned and poised to provide it’s bounty. The hydroponic beds are full and growing some beautiful and tasty greens.
New this year on the Farm will be Cold Hardy Kiwi and Hawaiian Pink Ginger. The Kiwi are “Ken’s Red Kiwi” they are about the size of a large Muscadine, are Red, and have an edible skin. They taste like the Kiwi we are familiar with, they have all the great vitamins and nutrients, but they are much easier to eat. We are really looking forward to our first harvest. The Ginger in on it’s way from Hawaii. We have grown ginger before, but this is supposed to be the Holy Grail of Ginger. Sweet, pungent, beautiful color and has a very long shelf life.
We will again be producing a community garden and CSA for Patrick Square in Clemson. This years CSA will incorporate more value added items in addition to their share of fresh produce. The pick-up for the CSA will be the Clemson Market on Friday afternoon at Patrick Square. We will also be on the CFSA farm tour this year. Our friends Heidi and Joe from Grits and Groceries will be here selling lunch, and we are the official Meal stop for our area of the tour. Tour buttons will go on sale soon, so make sure you get yours in advance. The tour is really fun, if you have not gone on the tour, I highly recommend it.
